THE LAUNCH OF CONAMA

 

During the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Africa Region Congress held in July 2013 at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, the newly formed continent-wide organization called CONFEDERATION OF AFRICAN MIDWIVES ASSOCIATIONS (CONAMA) was officially and successfully inaugurated at a gala dinner on the 17th of July 2013at the same venue.

This organization intends toprogressively embrace and represent all the midwives of Africa irrespective of their language. Continuing discussions will be held with other midwives bodies on the continent such as the Federation of French Speaking Midwives of Africa  (FASFACO) and Portuguese speaking Midwives inviting them to join so that CONAMA becomes a true representative of all African Midwives Associations.

THE CONAMA VISION

Confederation of African Midwives Associations (CONAMA) envisions an African continent where competent midwives are available in all settings to provide quality midwifery care in partnership with women, their families and the community.

THE CONAMA MISSION

To improve reproductive, newborn and child health in Africa by advocating for and strengthening  individual country midwifery associations to promote quality education, regulation and midwifery practice.

AIM OF CONAMA

To serve as a unifying voice for African Midwives in areas of professional development, education and quality midwifery care.

OBJECTIVES: To

  1. Enhance advocacy in Midwifery and for Midwifery care in partnership with women, their  families and the community.
  2. Work towards improving women and newborn health in member states.
  3. Promote and strengthen autonomous evidence based midwifery practice
  4. Advance quality basic and higher midwifery education.
  5. Promote strong midwifery regulation.
  6. Promote strong independent midwifery professional associations
  7. Promote regional and international collaboration and partnerships with other organizations in support of improvement in MNCH care
  8. Safeguard the professional interest of the midwife in relation to work environment and professional practice
  9. Promote strong leadership in midwifery.
  10. Promote and strengthen scholarship development of the Midwifery profession in Africa
  11. Promote income generation through the CONAMA secretariat to support development of midwifery services in member countries
